Lazarus, a native of Bethany was the brother of Mary and Martha, and a devout follower of Jesus. He fell ill, and his sisters summoned Jesus to visit him. When Jesus reached Bethany, Lazarus was already dead and buried for four days. In the presence of a large crowd, Jesus had the stone covering the entrance to Lazarus' tomb rolled away, and bade Lazarus to come out. Lazarus walked out of the tomb still wrapped in grave-cloths. This episode convinced many Jews of the divinity of Jesus Christ.
